SAXONS CONTINUE TO EXPAND!
This year we added U6, U8 and U12 to our club. Next year we will complete the expansion by adding the final age group--Under 14. We will need to continue to recruit players as U14 rugby is played as 15 a side. Our first U14 team may be a co-ed team but, ideally, if we have the numbers we would like to add teams for both u14 girls and u14 boys.
And we thought that would be the end of our expansion….However a group of minor rugby moms convinced us that we should consider one more team--a women's flag rugby team! We are pleased to announce that on Sunday September 20, right before our SOBs face the KROCs, a Saxons women's flag team will face the Peterborough Wiccans. The Wiccans are a part of the Peterborough Pagans organization and have been practicing and playing inter-squad games for the past 2 season, but they have not played against another team. So needless to say, they were very excited about the idea of travelling to Cobourg with the Peterborough old boys to play a match against our women. There will be a few practices leading up to the game: September 3, 10, & 17 at 6:30pm at CDCI West field. This is a no contact game and no experience necessary. For more information please contact Mel Crosby or Mike McMahon.
Saxons Secure Ontario Trillium Grant
In 2013 Mike Killoran and Don Maillet submitted an Ontario Trillium Application for the Cobourg Saxons. The application outlined the need to purchase new equipment to successfully launch the second phase of our minor rugby program. The application also requested funding to help purchase a scrum machine and rucking pads, equipment that would help our junior and senior teams remain competitive in the Toronto Rugby Union. The equipment, except for the scrum machine, has been in use since the second half of the 2014 season. The scrum machine is in storage and will be in use when we beginning using our new pitch at Westwood Park. The saxons would like to thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation and Mike Killoran and Don Maillet.
